Over 500,000 pumpkins are sold in Ireland each Halloween, and leftovers could invite rats and mice indoors…
A pumpkin left on the doorstep or thrown in the garden is a free feed for rats and mice. It’s soft, sweet and sitting right beside your front door, which is the last place you want to be drawing rodents. We see the same thing every year once Halloween is over.”
Rodents Are Already on the Move
Rodents don’t need much encouragement at this time of year. Once a mouse finds food beside your home, it’ll look for a way inside, and it can squeeze through a gap about the width of a pencil. Removing easy food sources is the simplest thing you can do to stay pest-free through the winter.”
How to Make Your Pumpkin Last
- Time your carving: An uncarved pumpkin keeps for weeks, but once carved it can start to soften within a few days, so carve as close to Halloween as you can.
- Give it a vinegar rinse: Soak the carved pumpkin for around 30 minutes in a bucket of water with a few splashes of vinegar, then leave it to dry. This helps kill off the bacteria and mould that speed up rotting.
- Keep it moist: Carving exposes the flesh to the air, so mist the inside with water regularly to stop it drying out.
- Swap candles for LEDs: A candle’s heat dries the pumpkin out from the inside, while an LED light won’t.
- Find a sheltered spot: Strong sun turns pumpkins mushy and heavy rain encourages mould, so keep yours somewhere dry and covered.
How to Keep Your Halloween Rodent-Free
- Don’t leave pumpkins out for days: Bring carved pumpkins in or dispose of them within a day or two of Halloween.
- Use the right bin: Put leftover pumpkin in your brown bin or a closed compost bin, never an open compost heap.
- Eat the insides: Cook the flesh and roast the seeds rather than leaving pulp lying around outside.
- Seal up the sweets: Store leftover treats in sealed containers, not open bags or bowls.
- Pack decorations in plastic tubs: Rodents chew through cardboard easily and use it for nesting.
- Seal gaps before the clocks go back: Check around doors, pipes, vents and skirting boards, and fill any cracks.
- Act at the first sign: If you hear scratching or spot droppings or gnaw marks, contact pest control early, before a small problem becomes an infestation.
