Solar and Energy Bills: The Nine-Week Delay Costing Irish Households

New search data shows Irish search interest in electricity bills peaks nine weeks before interest in solar panels, leaving many households playing catch-up…

With electricity bills in the news on the back of a Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU) report showing that 322,298 households, or 14% of all domestic customers, were behind on their bills in April 2026, Buckley Electrical says solar power might just be the solution, if only more people adopted it in time.

Solar isn't a luxury anymore, it's one of the few ways a household can actually take control of a bill that keeps climbing," says Kieran Buckley, Founder of Buckley Electrical. "The problem isn't whether solar works. It's that people wait until the damage is already done before they look into it."

A Nine-Week Delay

Analysing five years of weekly Irish search data, Buckley Electrical found that search interest in "electricity bill" consistently peaks in the last week of January, right as the first winter bills land. General interest in solar panels doesn't peak until the last week of March, roughly nine weeks later, and with network charges adding a further €41.25 to the average annual bill from October 1st, only partly offset by a cut to the Public Service Obligation levy, that delay is only getting more expensive.

That delay matters because solar isn't a same-week job. SEAI's own guidance confirms the installer's application to connect a new system to the ESB Networks grid alone takes at least four weeks before solar panel installation can even go ahead, and once granted, the SEAI grant payment itself takes a further four to six weeks to process after the work is done. Add quotes and a BER assessment, and a January decision realistically doesn't turn into a working system for months.

None of that has to happen in a rush," Kieran says. "The information doesn't change between January and March, only people's readiness to act on it does."

Where the Interest Actually Is

Mapping town-level search data against county boundaries, Buckley Electrical found the ten counties with the strongest combined interest in solar-related search terms were:

Kildare's search dominance may partly reflect its recent growth. CSO Census 2022 figures show the county's population rose by 11% between 2016 and 2022, one of the fastest rates in the country, driven largely by Dublin commuters settling in Naas, Newbridge, Celbridge and Maynooth. New housing developments and higher energy use among commuter households, including EVs and home offices, may help explain why interest in solar is concentrated there. Nationally, that curiosity is backed by action too. SEAI awarded 33,048 grants under its Solar PV Scheme in 2025, a 16% rise on 2024 and the highest figure on record.

It's a good sign when curiosity turns into installs," Kieran says. "It shows people aren't just considering solar, they're following through."

Getting Ahead of Next January

Buckley Electrical's advice is straightforward: treat the quiet months, not the panicked ones, as the time to act. Homeowners on qualifying welfare payments may also be eligible for free upgrades through SEAI's Warmer Homes Scheme, though current wait times run to roughly two years from application to completed works, a reminder that even fully funded support rewards those who apply early.

If you wait until the bill lands to start asking questions, you're already behind," Kieran says. "Get your roof assessed, get your SEAI grant application in and get the installation booked before the rush starts. That way, by the time next January's bill arrives, you're already generating your own electricity instead of just staring at the damage."

How the Data Was Gathered

Search interest data was analysed from Google Trends, Ireland, weekly, covering August 15th, 2021, to August 16th, 2026, for the terms "electricity bill," "solar panels," "solar panels ireland," "SEAI grant" and "solar battery." County-level comparisons were built by mapping town-level search results to their counties. National solar installation figures for 2025 are sourced from SEAI, as reported by the Irish Farmers Journal. Energy arrears figures are sourced from RTÉ's reporting on Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU) data, and network charge figures from the CRU directly. Grant process timelines were obtained from SEAI's Solar Electricity Grant guidance. Population growth figures for Kildare are sourced from the CSO's Census 2022 results.
